1 cup of white vinegar is a good natural water softener.. just throw in the cup with the washing soap.. both for clothes washers and dish washers.. my water in my area is so hard, it leaves white pasty crust on everything.. but the vinegar keeps it from sticking to pipes and such.. the smell doesnt linger somehow.. its great..
