A shark's skeleton is made of cartilage. This is also true of rays, sawfish, chimaeras, and primitive bony fish.
Cartilage is an elastic tissue that becomes bone as an animal matures. Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and most fish have cartilage, which becomes bone.
Also, unlike bony fish, sharks do not have a swim bladder. A swim bladder enables a fish to remain still for periods of time. A shark needs to keep moving or it will sink.
Of the hundreds of species of sharks, only a handful are dangerous to man, including the great white shark (maneater), mako, hammerhead shark, great blue shark, and related sharks (mackerel sharks and ground sharks). Nurse sharks and dogfish are usually docile. The basking shark and whale shark are big, but do not even eat meat, and are totally harmless.
