If I have, say, for example, a web design / graphic design company, does it help if I have words related to the company in the URL...

smart-webdesign.com

as opposed to

smart.com...???

OR is it just about smart meta tags, keywords, title tags etc...??

Your thoughts would be apreciated.

Keywords in a domain are only helpful if they are separated by a hyphen. And then they are only marginaly helpful.

However you would only choose to have a hyphenated domain name if branding was not an issue.

File names in the url are another matter and they should if possible always have keywords separated by hyphens. See http://www.seo-blog.com/url-update.php

Google looks at keywords and their relevancy so having keywords in the url isn't a bad idea. It really won't make much of a difference in SEO but if the url is an accurate representation of the website then I believe there will be increase in targeted traffic.

Yes,
If you can, use your keywords in the domain name.
If your purpose is branding, then you must use the company name.

I've got a site ranked no 1 in google for the keyword i choose. The trick is use the keyword as the domain name. In my case, i use the hyphened version.

Hi,

In optimization those things count little, very little. That's known as onpage optimization, the important is offpage optimization.

Adding websitedesign, to smart is better for your website visitors cause they understand more what your site is about.
