The story of the 666 is from the Book of Revelation. Revelation was not originally written in English nor were Arabian numbers (1-2-3-6-6-6, 999, etc.) in vogue in the historical context of Revelation. The '666' describes a certain, historical personage who was alive and well when the Book of Revelation was written. It is important to understand that the line from Revelation that the 666 comes from is written in the present tense, rather than the future tense. This means that it refers to someone alive and well when Revelation was written. Most people erroneously read that line as "...It is the number of a certain man and his number shall be 666..." THAT IS INCORRECT, for it is written: "...and his number IS six-hundred and sixty-six..."

The author of Revelation was referring to a certain person alive and well when he penned those words. That somebody was none other than Caesar Nero, the very same person responsible for his exile to the Island of Patmos. In order to calculate the number of the Beast it is necessary to understant that the early Christians were bilingual Hebrew/Greek. When Casesar Nero's name is written out in Hebrew and a numberic value is assigned to each letter of his name, then his name sums up to 666. It is also essential to understand that to the early Christian community of the time of Revelation that number signified complete imperfection.

Revelation goes on to say that the writer was amazed to see the Beast receive a mortal head wound yet live again. It is historically significant that Caesar Nero committed suicide by striking himself on the head (neck) with his own sword, thus receiving a mortal head wound. His successor was his nephew Domitian, an even worse persecutor of the early Christians. Coincidentally (or not!), Domitian written in Greek, with a numeric value assigned to each letter also adds up to... You guessed it, 666. And so the Beast lived again. Those who try to assign the 666 to someone in the present age are wasting everyone's time because it is all... history.

The Number of the Beast is a concept from the Book of Revelation of the New Testament of the Christian bible. The Number is 666 in modern texts, although 616 and 665 appear instead in at least one ancient source.[1] Scholars contend that the number is a code for the Roman Emperor Nero,[2] a view that is supported by the Roman Catholic Church[3] [4] and Reformed Christianity.

Some think it will be from Chip Implants. Reporting technology currently in place which eventually could be used when the edict is issued to take the mark of the beast in the right hand or in the forehead in order to buy or sell or be killed.
Others think
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that the Beast for which 666 stands symbolizes many governments, harmonizing with the symbolic depiction of past governments (denoted as "kings") in the Book of Daniel as wild beasts. The Beast is said to have "a human number" in that the governments that the beast symbolizes are all of a human origin, they aren't made up of spirit or demon entities. The number 666 is also believed to be symbolic, standing for imperfection. The number seven is interpreted as being a "perfect" or "complete" number based on the fact that it is used frequently in the Bible to signify completeness, for example Psalm 12:6 and the Genesis creation week. Just as six is one short of seven, imperfection is short of perfection, and hence six is interpreted as symbolizing imperfection. Six is repeated three times for emphasis, producing the number 666. [28] (This is similar to Vines Expository Dictionary under "Sixty, Sixtyfold," which states: "The number is suggestive of the acme of the pride of fallen man, the fullest development of man under direct satanic control, and standing in contrast to 'seven' as the number of completeness and perfection.")
In Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), the number 666 may be considered mystical and holy and may represent the physical universe.[27]

Its all in the book of revelation the last one in the bible. And ye shall know the beast by his number and that number shall be six hundred three score and six. Some scholars think the book of revelation was written by revolutionaries who were opposed to Roman rule and a lot of the symbolism is to do with Roman occupation and battles. It was not written from the same perspective as the rest of the bible and was thought to have been written at a later time in Greece.
Of course some people thing the mark of the beast is bar codes and the end of the world is in 1999 how wrong were they!

it is 666 and it's the number of the devil. In the bible in the book of revelations it talks about how "the man who knows the meaning of 666 will have ultimate knowledge" or somthing like that. Thats all i really know though.

A clue to the meaning of 666 lies in its being “a man’s number,” or as The Amplified Bible puts it, “a human number.” This expression could not refer to an individual human, for Satan—not any man—has authority over the beast. (Luke 4:5, 6; 1 John 5:19; Revelation 13:2, 18) Rather, the beast’s having “a human number,” or mark, suggests that it is a human entity, not spirit or demon, and that it therefore manifests certain human traits. What might they be? The Bible answers, saying: “All [humans] have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) The beast’s having “a human number,” therefore, indicates that governments reflect the fallen human condition, the mark of sin and imperfection.

History bears this out. “Every civilization that has ever existed has ultimately collapsed,” said former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. “History is a tale of efforts that failed, of aspirations that weren’t realized . . . So, as a historian, one has to live with a sense of the inevitability of tragedy.” Kissinger’s honest appraisal testifies to this fundamental Bible truth: “To earthling man his way does not belong. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step.”—Jeremiah 10:23.

Now that we have identified the beast and discerned how God views it, we are in a position to examine the final part of our puzzle—the number six and why it is written in triple digits—that is, 666, or 600 plus 60 plus 6.

Six Repeated Three Times—Why?

In the Scriptures, certain numbers have symbolic significance. The number seven, for example, is often used to symbolize that which is complete, or perfect, in God’s eyes. For instance, God’s creative week comprises seven ‘days,’ or extended time periods, during which God completely accomplishes his creative purpose regarding the earth. (Genesis 1:3–2:3) God’s “sayings” are like silver that has been “clarified seven times,” thus perfectly refined. (Psalm 12:6; Proverbs 30:5, 6) The leper Naaman was told to bathe seven times in the Jordan River, after which he was completely healed.—2 Kings 5:10, 14.

Six is one short of seven. Would it not be a fitting symbol of something imperfect, or defective, in God’s eyes? Yes, indeed! (1 Chronicles 20:6, 7) Moreover, six repeated three times, as 666, powerfully stresses that imperfection. That this is the correct view is supported by the fact that 666 is “a human number,” as we have considered. Thus, the beast’s record, its “human number,” and the number 666 itself all point to one unmistakable conclusion—gross shortcoming and failure in the eyes of Jehovah.

The portrayal of the beast’s deficiencies calls to mind what was said about King Belshazzar of ancient Babylon. Through Daniel, Jehovah said to that ruler: “You have been weighed in the balances and have been found deficient.” That very night Belshazzar was killed, and the mighty Babylonian Empire fell. (Daniel 5:27, 30) Likewise, God’s judgment of the political beast and of those with its mark spells the end of that entity and its supporters. In this instance, however, God will eradicate not just one political system but every vestige of human rule. (Daniel 2:44; Revelation 19:19, 20) How important, therefore, that we avoid having the deadly mark of the beast!

It is a number in modern times, but back then it meant taxes. I am not sure if it was the amount you had to pay or it was considered a word, but it was greatly hated then and was thought it would be erased if everyone thought it was evil. Scholars and High Priest all alike knew it was wrong but as society grew they looked for something knew to hate so the devil was invented to replace the hatred for taxes. Its still being hidden from the people with the bible today.
