It seems the only presendentail candidates taken seriously by the media are the ones who are "good fundraisers"! Thus propelling these "fundraisers" into the White House! Well I wonder if we could have a modern day George McGovern from the Campaign Trail of '72 in '08? If we do who would this "Dark Horse" be?

I wish it were so and while not completely out the realm of possibility, it is still highly unlikely. The presidency and politics in general are controlled by the big 2. This is because the money involved is out of the reach for most independent and 3rd party candidates. Then there is also the idea that most have which is they identify themselves as Republicans or Democrats and only appear to feel safe when voting for a party candidate. As stated before I wish it could be so because we need new unaffiliated blood in politics. People who are elected under the party system end up owing favors, usually to lobbyists representing unseen power brokers and the American people suffer for it. In short it is a noble idea, but one that is unlikely to become a reality at any point in the near future.

First of all, it's repugnant to me that all politicians can't sit down and approve a bill regarding campaign finance reform that will shut the door on lobbyists and fat cat donations once and for all. Until the government does that, it would take a miracle for someone to win who didn't have the funds or free air time to even get across their ideas to the public. As for a "dark horse" in '08, someone with a familar name would have to really have to standout, someone with a public record of fairness, honesty, and success. That person would be Colin Powell, former General, leader of Desert Storm, former secretary of state, who was fired for disagreements with Bush on his Iraq War policy. Powell wouldn't need as much funding as someone who was less known. He's very intelligent, fair, a great leader, a unifier, & would really shake up both parties. He would most likely win in a 3-way race, say between Hillary & McCain. He'd be an awesome choice for the country & the world.

It *could* happen--it's just highly unlikely. The only way for it to happen would be for that candidate to somehow hit BIG with some kind of huge media event and a message so outstanding that everyone starts talking about it, and the media is forced to pay attention. It's more likely to happen now than ten years ago--the Internet would help. But still... I wouldn't hold my breath.
