Your hard drive does not have a sound chip. A hard drive is only the storage facility of your PC. The sound comes either from the sound card, or a built in sound card on your motherboard.

Check that the sound card is installed properly and is detected/registered by Windows (presumably you're using Windows). Close down all windows till you get to your desktop. Right click on the "My Computer" icon and select "Properties" from the list.

Select "Hardware" and click on the "Device Manager" button. Scroll down till you see Sound, Video and Games Controllers. Check that there are no exclamation marks or red crosses with any of the items in the list. If there is, there is a problem with the installation of a particular device. Depending on what it is, this may be the cause of your problem.

What makes you so conviced that it's the HDD?

Have you tried taking the sound card out of your PC and installing it in another to see if it works there? If it doesn't then it's definitely your sound card.

If it does, have you tried reinstalling the soundcard back into your PC, let Windows detect it and reinstall it?

the hard drive is a device which stores all your data. The sound card is a completely separate piece of hardware. It is either on board or plugged into an expansion slot and has about four different colored holes in the back to plug in mic, speakers, etc. The only thing That hard drive has to with the sound is that the sound drivers (program that runs the hardware - sound card) would be stored on the hard drive. The sound card MAY have gone out or the drivers may need to be re-installed for the sound card. It could be something as simple as your volume is turned all the way down too.

ok buddy, i'll try to help you out.

your hardrive doesn't have an audio controller. your sound card does have an audio chip. or you have an audio controller on the motherboard itself. in any case, it has nothing to do with your hardrive.

it's possible that your controller became damaged but more likely you just got a corrupted driver. if you have a driver disc that came with your system try reinstalling the audio device drivers. if you don't have the disc then track down what audio controller you're using and you can pick up a driver from the manufacturer's website.

if you still have no luck after that, try pulling the audio card and reseating it in the pci bus. sometimes they can jimmy loose. while you're in there give it good vaccum or air can dusting to clean out the bus slot.

rather than swapping hardrives, i would make my last effort in swapping audio cards with the other pc. (you'll need to update drivers appropriately for this as well)....if that does the trick, then you know you need a new card.

there is no sound card on your HDD. you have either a PCI card, or else it is intergrated on your Motherboard.

It sounds like you have the intergrated card and it has a problem Go to Wal-Mart and get an inexpensive card. Put it in and see if that works...Wal-Mart usually will take back the card if it doesn't help
