I have two male dwarf russian hamsters, and have had them for about a month. They have been inseperable friends - until yesterday. A very large fight broke out and blood was shed. It was very out of character.
They have now been separated, but can someone tell me whether it is worth trying to get them to live together again - or are they now condemned to being separated and living on their own?

They shouldn't be housed together, fighting is inevitable. I have seen Russian hamsters rip each other to shreds in the past!!

I had exactly the same problem with two of my russian hamsters. I have no idea why this happens. I seperated them and every time i tried bringing them back together, they would always fight. They seemed pretty happy seperate so i kept them like that until one died of old age. I have a male and femal now, they get along fine.

the exact same thing happened to my partner's hamsters when he was a little boy. (we've been swapping hamster stories coz we bought our 4 year old son a hamster last weekend). his hamsters were brothers too, and only started fighting after a few weeks. a lot of it has to do with territory & hormones.... they are probably getting to the age where they are wanting a mate - so it's a bit like putting two teenage boys in a house together & throwing away the key ! the pet shop should have never sold u 2 male hamsters to put in 1 cage. they need to be kept seperate. good luck !

I had two dwarf hamsters Chalk and Cheese who started off living together and were great friends but then Cheese started chasing Chalk everywhere and the fighting started so I had to separate them. They ended up in separate cages living much more happily. Its best to keep them apart to be honest.

You can keep 2 female russians or a male with either one or two females but you can never keep 2 males together, as you've seen they will literally kill each other. They're very very territorial hamsters.

I had about 12 of these when I was a kid and by avoiding ever keeping the males together I never had a problem with any of them

You were lucky they stayed together for a while in the first place. Whoever sold them to you should have told you that under no circumstances should you put two same sex dwarf hamsters together in a cage and expect them to live in harmony.

Sometimes they can live together amicably and sometimes not. Had a little of baby russian hamsters who, after a few months, all picked on their daddy and killed him! How gutted was I. Separate them if they fight worryingly and dont reintroduce them. Could mean you have a whole house full of hamster cages though if you're not careful.

Dwarf hamsters, or all hamsters for that matter, are purely solitary animals and should be housed seperately. They are territorial and extremely aggressive towards each other. I would NOT put them back in together or you will end up with only one hamster.(Trust me I work for a well known pet store chain)

Most breeds of hamsters can't live together, but dwarf Russian ones can - usually. I had a pair of dwarf Russian hamsters who lived together for their entire lives. When one died, the other one died within a week (of a broken heart I hope) :-)

They will start fighting as soon as there mothers scent is away. You should never house same sex hamsters they will fight to the death eventually, you should try split cage in half so they can still see each other but can't actually harm each other
