Compare them to every other nation....no better no worse when you get to the root of it.
Also, chosen perhaps to spread the word of God, it originated there really (whether it be Jewish, Christian, or something relating to them). Look at the influence of these religions.
Or perhaps they were chosen in the sense that they're pretty damn resilient. Look at all the mass genocides that have been attempted on the Jews. They always seem to make a comeback though.
It all depends on interpretation really.

Most tribal and nationalistic people believe that their group is the best. Most Americans believe they are members of the greatest nation in the world and that they have the best military. Most religious people believe that their religion is the correct and true one. The belief that one's group was chosen by God is nothing more than a variant of these other beliefs, and is it responsible for more than a little arrogance and sense of entitlement as well as violence and war.
