I have loved to read since I was a little girl. I am a relatively fast reader, and I have always scored high on standardized tests of comprehension. I would say in general, reading is usually a strength of mine. Reading novels, literature, poetry, non-fiction, biographies, stories, ANYTHING I can read with ease EXCEPT college textbooks! Its very weird, because when it comes to reading my college text I am completely unmotivated because I have such a hard time concentrating. The chapters are so long, and the content is so full of vagueness, jargon, and mostly information I find to be boring or presented in a very dull and/or complicated way. When I read my textbooks I don't feel like I'm truly absorbing much of the material at all. I zone out, my mind drifts, and I feel like I CAN'T control it. I'll read a page, pause to review what I just read, and find I have no clue.

Please help, has anyone else experienced this? What can I do to overcome this problem?

Why do I have so much difficulty and do you have any tips for less painful textbook reading, and increased focus and comprehension???

usually collage level text books are just genuinly a dry read and arent enjoyable other things usuall have some interest to them...
also you have to think about how much you paid for those suckers every time you look at them haha but yeah it's probably cause of their "direct information no value" it's like trying to ask why a pie chart isnt as appeling to the eyes as a oil painting...
one thing you can do to help you retain the information is write down the information as you read take notes along while reading the text and summerize in your own words to keep you on your toes so to speak, if none of that works just read them and try and memorize the info the best you can and take the tests
goodluck!

Take a deep breath. Slow down. You are thinking too fast. Why don't you take some time away from the books and learn to meditate. Imagine you are reading your favorite novel, a best seller, you cannot put it down. Okay, deep breath. Slowly. Picvk up the textbook. Read it slowly. Deep breath.

I had the same problem in college. I'm not sure if there's a good reason why, aside from having a short attention span.

Perhaps you should take classes on things you find interesting, and find professors who are good at lecturing so you don't have to read.

Text books are boringly dull or dully boring, take your pick. They are written by dull people who don't know how to communicate.
