Go to TripAdvisor.com and look at the Chicago forums. Lot's of good advice from locals.
There really aren't any "cheap" places to stay. Average motel might run around $100, depending on where you are going. Downtown or near the airport is most expensive.

My friend, if you don't mind riding the subway to and from Queens, may I recommend the La Quinta Inn on 40th St and Queens Blvd. Rooms there go for $100 a nite. The hotel is steps from 40th St station on the #7 subway line.

Smile,
It depends what school you are visiting...You may end up spending more to travel if you stay in a cheap hotel... Not all cheap hotels in Chicago are safe.....

Checking the web is a good bet.
A couple of specific suggestions:
Best Western has three good locations. 2 in River North, and 1 in Lakeview.
Days Inn has a couple of good locations in Lincoln Park.
Location-wise you'd be very happy with any of those.
