I think the best way to provide good customer service is to actually understand what it is the customer wants. Since every customer is different they are going to want things differently and that's where the listening skills come in.

Along with that is the ability to help somone without making them feel pressured. Most people are looking to buy, they don't go out with a ton of money in their pocket ready to drop it all on something that day. If they are pleased with their service, most people will actually pay a little more than go cheapy and get bad service. If the good price and the good service go together, that makes it all better.

The third thing is to not only know and understand your products, but also to believe in them. If you don't think your product really is a good product, you are going to have to work that much harder to fake it and get a sale. People are generally a bit more saavy that salespeople take them for, especially when it's easy to research items on the internet. Know you product and the rest should be easier.
