Both are very diverse, but I would say that LA is more so, as more business takes place there, and it is larger. The music scene is very intense, and the art scene is just beginning to become a big deal and was covered by the NY Times magazine a few months ago.
LA is more spread out than your typical city, SanFrancisco is more compact. LA is cheaper to live in I'd say.
Don't know where you are coming from, but be prepared for culture shock - So. Cal is unlike anyplace else.

I'd say Woodland Hills, not too far from Hollywood with it's culture and fame. Lots of clubs that play local bands from what I know, but I'm not a bar hopper. I have cousins in San Francisco and they like it there. A tad bit expensive though from what they tell me. My cousin and his wife both have big degrees and they both have to work to have any kind of income after payments.
San Fransisco isn't as diverse culture wise, but Southern California is full of that stuff. A lot of Asians and Hispanics. African Americans too. Hollywood Bowl is a great place for outdoor concerts, if orchestra and big-band music is your thing.
There is quite a bit of history in both cities, both are rich with culture and personality, but I would say that San Francisco is a friendlier place. LA is great for music, SF is good for art, but there's plenty of each in both places. The rest is personal preference.

Either will give you what you want. I personally prefer L.A. To me San Francisco comes across as much more pretentious.

San francisco, u can trip on acid with ex-hippies, and maybe find a loose hippie chick and possibly have a rumble. But on the other hand it is full of left-wing fanatics. L.A is smoggy and full of snobs

Portland, OR and Austin, TX would also be great options for you, and waaaaaaaaaaaay less expensive than either SF or LA.
