2007 - North Korea’s recent test of a nuclear weapon, Iran’s nuclear ambitions, a renewed U.S. emphasis on the military utility of nuclear weapons, the failure to adequately secure nuclear materials, and the continued presence of some 26,000 nuclear weapons in the United States and Russia.Experts assessing the dangers posed to civilization have added climate change to the prospect of nuclear annihilation as the greatest threats to humankind. Clock changed to five minutes to midnight.

The official announcement of the most recent change to five minutes to midnight took place on January 17, 2007 at 14:30 hours GMT

Why was it lower (2 minutes to midnight)in 1953 when the United States and the Soviet Union tested thermonuclear devices within nine months of one another?

However, in response to a perception of increased scientific cooperation and public understanding of the dangers of nuclear weapons, clock is changed to seven minutes to midnight in 1960.

Is the clock accurate today?

I think Albert Einstein said it best when he said, "I know not what WW3 will be fought with, but WW4 will be fought with sticks and stones."

In that quote, he pretty much simplified that the people of the world will destroy themselves. It's my favorite quote, and I agree with him. We're in a nuclear arms race now. We (the US) have them, China has them, Russia has them, Iran wants them, NK has them... the list goes on and on.

We don't see anyone destroying any, just countries like us who are keeping them "just in case", or countries like NK who want to build more. It's scary to think some of these, who are in the want, are unstable areas. So, yes, I believe the clock is accurate for present day.

It was closer in 1953 because we had just USED two on Japan. As the threat dwindled down, the clock was lower in 1960. I'm sure if we checked to see what it was in 1985 in the throes of the Cold War it would be pretty close to what it is now.

Ya this is a critical clock. With N Korea in serious negotiations to give up the bomb and S Africa having had the bomb and giving it up. the hopes that our contribution as a species to Co2 in the atmosphere will come to a dramatic nuclear end are pretty dim in my opinion.

God will step in and their will be an annihilation not with nukes but with wickedness and Babylonian religions that have captivated billions of people away from the real truth of God.
God will eventually destroy unrepentant and his begotton Son Jesus will rule as king over the earth doing away with human governments.
