The numbers are 22 and 56. Here's how I figured it out:

x - y = 34
3y -10 = x

So:

(3y - 10) - y = 34

2y - 10 = 34

2y = 44

y = 22

Plug y into the first equation:

3(22) - 10 = x

66 - 10 = x

56 = x

a - b = 34 [formula 1]
Because the difference between the 2 numbers is 34

and

b = 3a - 10 [formula 2]
because the second number (b) is 10 lower than 3 times the first number (3a)

now you substitute 3a - 10 instead of b in formula 1, because what formula 2 tells us is that b and (3a-10) are the same thing.

a - (3a - 10) = 34
a - 3a + 10 = 34
-2a = 24
a = -12

now you find b using formula 2

b = 3a - 10

b = 3(-12) - 10
b = -36 - 10
b = -46

Angelic made his/her error in assuming that the difference is a - b or b - a. If you use his numbers, then a is 22, and b is 56.
[formula 1] 22 - 56 =/ 34 (it is actually minus 34)
[formula 2] 56 = 66 - 10
It satisfies formula 2, but not formula 1

Hope this helps

Here are the first two steps in figuring out the problem; let's see if you can figure out the rest:

The difference of two numbers is 34.
a - b = 34

The second is 10 less than 3 times the first.
b = 3a - 10

The model method:
1st number----------------------U + 10
2nd number---------------------U + U + U + 10 + 10 (10 less than 3 times the first)
Difference = 2U+10 (observe above model) = 34 (given in question)
hence, 2U = 34 - 10>>>>2U = 24 >>>1U=12
1st number: U + 10 >>>12 + 10 = 22
2nd number: U+U+U+10+10 >>> 36 + 20 >>> 56

x - y =34 and y = 3x-10 per the stated problem. Substitute the value of y in the first equation and solve
x -(3x-10) = 34
x -3x+10 = 34
-2x+10 = 34
-2x = 34 - 10
-2x=24
x = 24/-2
x=-12
If you put that value in the original problem, then
-12 -y = 34
-y = 34+12
-y = 46
(-1)(-y) = (-1)(46)
y = -46
-12-(-46) = 34
-12+46=34
