theres completely no air ventilation, its basically trapping all the air inside.

i have a huge problem with my xbox 360 at home getting hot with plenty of ventilated space up high surrounded by nothing.

Look again - the box has holes (for the controller cords if nothing else), and most likely no back at all. It also usually has no solid object underneath, just brackets that hold the box in place.

Also, most stores have much better ventilation than your house. Stagnation of air allows heat buildup much more than mere constriction of space.

You know, thats a really good question! That box can't be trapping all of the air inside because the system wouldn't work at all. I think that there is a ventilation system in the back of the display.

lower to the ground is better than up high, hot air rises, I know the regular xbox has a fan that you can hear/feel kick on, it could be possible that yours is shorted out and not working, in which case you could just get a fan from elsewhere and point it at your xbox and keep it turned onto it ;)
