I'm moving to the UK to study. I am an American. How will most people receive me? Will I be discriminated against? I hear people in the north tend to be nicer to Americans.

I'm still looking into where to study. I've already been accepted into the U of Liverpool but I'm not sure. how about Glasgow? is it nice?

Where should I go?!?!

Thanks!!!!!!!

On the whole Americans don't have a problem fitting in here so long as they keep their braying voices down and learn quickly not to say sidewalk, cellphone and elevator when they should be saying pavement, mobile and lift.
Also, leave your little idiosyncrasies at home, like refusing to let others see your laundry drying (Two Texan girls we had staying told us this was perverted. They couldn't answer why they were happy to be seen strutting around in mini skirts with their knickers showing to all, though).

The best advice I can give you is to do it! I have been on the other end of the stick - a brit studying in the states. It can be different culturally, but you will have a great time if you go into it with an open mind. Some people will tell you they had a hard time, but alot of it is down to attitude. Some people refuse to adjust, some come into it with an arrogent attitude. You'll be fine if you want to make it work!
As for Glasgow or Liverpool. I would say Liverpool from the point of view it is more central if you plan on going to see the rest of the UK and you want to do it in shorter trips, rather than all at once. It has been named European city of Culture 2008, so there will be some exciting developments and changes going on there. Having said that Glsgow was the fist city to get that award, so has already got there!!! Nevertheless Liverpool would get my vote, definately.
Have a great time and make the most of it!

Most people in the UK will be fine with you but as with everywhere there are some people who are just plain ignorant. I find people are generally more polite and friendly in the North but there are plenty of nice people everywhere. If I were you I would pick my uni by the courses and which offers the best facilities because I doubt anyone will seriously hassle you for being American where ever you go.

i'm American and that i studied out of the country at Queen Mary college and enjoyed it. My college had an replace software with them yet i'm surprisingly specific you could stick to independently even in the adventure that your college would not. it extremely is much less costly and the instructions have been great. human beings in London are great friendly for the main section and the accents are certainly comprehensible. in terms of uk adult adult males liking American females... not plenty haha a minimum of, not in the way that individuals like the English accents. yet do not difficulty, you've got a blast!

There are lot's of Americans studying in the UK. You'll be alright as long as you don't support George Bush.
