What could be making my wifes goldfish get black specks on it?

Sounds like ammoinia poisoning and this could make them die if you do not treat it asap what you need to do is a 50% water change and then but some aqua safe in their they sell this at petsmart and then every week for a month do a 1/4 tank change then they should do ok !! Goodluck !!
