.22lr is not powerful enough to ethically kill anything except for small game. Sure you can kill just about anything with one, but do you really want to have to shoot it 15 times before putting it down? The .17 hmr is a pretty fast moving and accurate round, but the lack of mass and diameter in the bullet make it unethical for hunting anything other than varmit of small game as well. Depending on your state regulations, you might consider the good old .223. Very little recoil to speak of, especially if shot through a heavy or semi-automatic rifle. There are plenty of people who kill wild hogs with .223 and where it is legal people will use them for animals like deer. The ballistics are quite good with .223, the bullet is drastically heavier than a .17hmr and much more powerful than a .22lr. Still though, this bullet makes a pretty small hole, so if the shot is there, shoot the brain stem (i.e. right behind the ear). You hit the brain stem and the animal will be dead before it ever hears the shot. Hope this helps!
