Working part-time while in school can be beneficial. Having a job forces one to better manage time which is a life skill. It also teaches the student the value of money and may help discourage wasting it. Such jobs, even menial ones, look good on both college and work applications. When I interviewed for my first federal job, I was in competition with a Phi Beta Kappa from Sarah Lawrence. However, I was the one hired because the Sarah Lawrence graduate had never worked a day in her life, and I had years of work experience that primarily consisted of lots of crummy, low-paying jobs I had in high school and college. Working also helps one learn to get along with different types of people--both co-workers and customers. However, having a job while a student can impact grades because the time spent working could have been used for studying. What often happens is that rest and relaxation suffer. The trick is to balance studying, working, and social activities so that none suffers too much.

I would let them work as long as it doesn't affect their schoolwork. It gives them a sense of self-worth and accomplishment. Also, they will have a greater understanding of the value of the dollar. Good Luck.
