The secondary consists of the defensive players who are not on the line of scrimmage. They are also called the defensive backfield on some occasions. The secondary consists of the Strong Safety, Free Safety, and Cornerbacks. The Strong Safety is primarily relied upon for run defense, while the Free Safety and Cornerbacks are utilized in pass protection schemes. Collectively, these players are referred to as defensive backs.

In some cases, the defense may replace one or two of the linebackers with additional DBs to offer additional pass protection. The fifth DB is known as the nickelback, and the sixth is called the dimeback. So if you're watching a football game and hear about a team using a nickel or dime package, you know that the defense is adding extra members to the secondary.
