it builds character when you respond to it positively. Like for example, when you lose, you will learn to accept it and strive to be better the next time you will play it. That's the character of being "sport". It will also reveal what character you have--your patience, competency and equity.

I think it does do both. Take Randy Moss, for example. He can talk all he wants about how he's a team guy and came to the Patriots so the team could win. But just look at his actions. When things don't go his way, he quits. Then you can look at a guy like Tim Tebow. Same caliber? No. But what happened last year when he lost a game that they probably should have won. He stepped up, said I will not let this happen with my team again, I will be a leader, and we will be #1, and that's exactly what happened. Some people will take the challenges that sports provide and allow it to turn them into a better person by being a leader, a better team player, and a better person all in all. Or, they will have things that don't happen the way that they want it to happen, and they will quit on the rest of their team, like Randy Moss. So, in my opinion, sports can both build and reveal character.

lt builds character. They learn discipline, patience and perseverance. Those are the positive traits.
Of course, there are negatives, too. One is too much confidence. They tend to look down on those who are not as good as them.

It can do both.
But when MY children were growing up, I saw too much physical and verbal abuse (from adults upon the kids). I, therefore, discouraged any kind of competition. They got enough from the world around them, without adding to it!

Both, but more reveal. It can also make or break a person, depending on their temperament.
