Well, just about any connection your PC can have to the broadband modem, whether it be USB, wireless or ethernet will be plenty fast enough. Both are much faster than the average internet connection. For example, an old USB 1.1 connection maxes out at 12mbps (1.5MB/s), but the average internet connection is well below 4mbps.
So when it comes to hardware, that's not where you should be concerned. Instead, make sure you aren't still using a dial-up connection. Get DSL or Cable broadband. Second, make sure Windows isn't bogged down with a ton of crap loaded at startup. Most internet problems I've seen are a result of slow Windows - not slow hardware.

1. Try to read and know about such thinks from information available on net etc. 2. You can only speed up response time in existing hardware 3. You can make your PC RESPOND faster, by cleaning and tuning registry, broken links, duplicate files, uninstalled and installation software files and accumulated useless data. For these various system utility softwares are there. Try Regvac, Regisrty Fix, CCleaner, System Mechanic, Advance System Optimizer etc are some of such. Always use them in areas safe to clean and not in systems, windows or MS Office files unless you know what you are doing. They can disrupt proper functioning o such programmes. 4. Not installing/uninstalling unwanted or rarely used programes will help. 5. Transfer your AV data & rich multimedia content on DVD/CD etc as you dont want to add hardware (additional Hard disk included) If additional Hard Disk is not a problem, it is a good storage media.

If you just want connectivity, then what matters most is the type of connection you have...not so much the hardware. If your a gamer, then hardware would be more of a factor....

atleast 128megs of memory and a 24bit video card are really the only thing. i've had pentium 1 and 2 machines that were really fast on my cable connection. any machine is "fast on the net". the speeds needed are for gaming and running programs on the computer itself.

generally the internet connection is the bottleneck, not the computer hardware.
