It is from the movie Rain Man (Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise) as other people have said, but is is the NON-autistic brother (tom cruise) who calls his older, autistic brother (dustin hoffman) "Rain Man" because he cannot pronounce his real name "Raymond" as a child. People use the term now as a reference to autism in association with this character.

In the movie, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) has a fit when Charlie (Cruise) turns on the hot water in the bathroom. This causes Charlie to remember that he used to call Raymond, "Rainman" presumably because he was so young and wasn't saying the name right. This would before he was sent to to an instituition and must have been early in the Charlie chararters life, because he eventually forgot he had a brother.
Now because of the film people use it to refer to an idiot suvant and/or autistic person.

If you are taking about the movie then it was a true story. I saw the person it was really about on TV the other day as for " Rain Man" He said that because that is what he called his brother. He was really saying Raymon.

It may pay tribute to old religions with Shamans and such whom would dance for their gods to send rain to bless the fields for crops and a good year all together.

it's usually used as a reference to an idiot savant, as in: "go ahead ask me anyone's phone number - I'm a total rainman about telephone numbers"
