We don't have to. If everyone found it objectionable it would not be encouraged. Since there are so many who find it enticing, it is encouraged.

Why is something indecent?

In India 60 years ago it was the custom to marry child wives and also for the widow to be burned alive on the husbands funeral pyre.

Why is this? How could this practice exist even crossing language barriers and mountains and rivers? I'll tell you, this is culture. This is culture and culture decides what is decent but I think reason should decide what is decent. Everything is backwards. Using reason define indecent for me?

Decent it not hurting someone. Descent is caring for someone else. I don't see clothing paying a very big role in decency.

But I think the people hurting people because of the way they dress to be pretty indecent.

First of all a message to 'Ron H'. What used to happen in India 60 years ago cannot be used as a base here to explain the revealing outfits. 60 years ago Indians were considered indecent for not treating women with equality and in today's date it's the so considered advanced west where the percentage of attrocities over women is higher than in India. 60 years ago Indians were blamed for not being able to control the population and bear a large family while in today's date, you can just look at plenty of postings at yahoo answers itself where those westerns proudly claim about having 4 or 5 kids.

now coming upto your point about indecency - people normally dress to impress. Since revealling outfits gather more attention they go for it. A few years down the line thse things won't matter us much. At that time these stars would possibly come out nude to gather attention. I don't think wearing revealing outfits is mimcking the westerners but an effort to stand out in crowd.

It's simple. Since a lady is not as much talented as kajol is, she did rather prefer mallika as her idol. cos that's something that's easy to follow and gains quick publicity. You jsut don't need to worry about what they show in the movies and the TV's. Even the movies of the west show a bit exagerated picture about the common outfits over there.

Secondly, while talking about culture, outfits have never been part of any culture. Let one wear what he/she's comfortable with. Just learn to look at it with respect. That's our culture...

:-)

A lot of what humans do is a mating display to attract others. The display methods vary from culture to culture but the purpose is the same.
Judging the cultural values of others based upon your own cultural values never gives a positive assessment of others. In my opinion we just have to accept that people are different and try to learn to live with them.

yes. dress plays a big role in Indian culture. A massive role than what any one can think. Its the west who ignore everything and give credit to the real one. But in India, its only the appearances which plays a big big role. and I am really really upset by the same. But i think, in one way, as importance is given to the rich culture of India, this also shld be taken seriously and one shld be properly dressed to hold his dignity.
