In the past, I've adopted dogs from the shelter, well my parents did, but now I want my own dog, a Pure Pomeranian and one that is just a few weeks and your not going to find them in the shelter, well not the ones in my area, because I've checked. Now I'm not going to pay thousands of dollars for my pup either but I dont see the problem buying your pets from well known breeders and pet stores that have a good history with their animals. Now I see these protesters are coming on here now ranting, what happens to the animals are ready to be sold, are they suppose to stay caged without a home just because your trying to prove a point. I've heard about the puppy mills and it is sad, but not EVERY breeder or pet store owner runs their business like that. What can we do, these animals are here and breathing already and INNOCENT, you can't stop people from buying there pets.

To Tirya: ok I understand your point, but you still didnt answer my question, What about the animals that are already here in the pet stores? Maybe eventually they well be put in the shelters or rescue facilities when they are too old to be sold, but people have their preference, and they will go for the cute pups in the windows waiting to be brought home. This is a situation that can't be stopped unless you can figure out another way shut down puppy mills, because at the end of the day you are still asking me to forget about the animals that are breed by breeders and the pets that are in the pet stores, putting them in the same situation that the pets are in from the shelters and rescue facilities, only difference is that money is being exchanged.

If you want a show quality dog, then you have to get it from AKC registered parents. Ones who have won some titles themselves are best. If you contact these kinds of breeders, then you can check out the conditions that the dogs are being raised in while you are there looking over the pups. How many animals are on the site? What kind of shape are the others in, and what are the living conditions like? Are both parents (of the puppies) there? These are all things that you should check for if you are looking for a well-bred and well cared for puppy. It should not cost anywhere near what you are thinking, but it may cost a few hundred dollars, depending on the lineage.

What is happening is people are trying to stop puppy mills mainly and if the Pet Stores keep selling pups, they keep the puppy mills going...so the quest is to stop people from buying from pet stores..
Breeders, well, I have met many breeders, some are excellent and some are not, just as you have stated.
I do agree with you, not all should be "branded" as bad breeders or puppy mills.
Go to a breeder, it's cheaper than an pet store and you can check out where the pup came from and how they run their breeding business for yourself..
Yes, the pups are here and breathing as you say, but try to do your research...don't add to the profits of the puppy mills..the cruelty is horrific.
Good question though..good point too.

I'm a behaviorist who works with dogs. Pups raised in mills and sold in pet stores often have fear problems and are poorly socialized. They may end up developing aggression issues. They also may have hidden health issues that don't show up in the window at the store.
To top it off, you mentioned price, and pet stores often jack up the price of purebred animals. If you MUST get a purebred, go to a good private breeder where you can meet the parents of the dog.
The BEST thing, in my opinion, is to Google Pomeranian Rescue and the name of your town or state. There might be a perfect Pom waiting for your home. Look on Petfinder to see if they have any puppies in your town. (My Chinese Crested was on Petfinder.)

Not with that attitude, you're not.
What can you do? Adopt from Rescue. Because if you feel bad for the pups in the pet stores and buy them to "save" them, you're dooming generations to come because the scumsucking puppy mills and BYBs make money and breed more.

Pet stores RARELY sell show quality dogs, so if you think you'll want to show your dog, avoid the pet store.
I would recommend that you find a local breeder and tour the facilities before you make your decision. That way you can see for youself how the place is run and whether or not you want to support that particular breeder by purchasing one of his or her pups.

Sometimes there are breeders in the paper as Iam sure you are aware of. Pomeranians run about $3-4.00.00, You can buy from a Pet store they guarentee health. Anyway they are already here to so they need homes.

I would recommend that you look online at rescue groups, not a shelter, but a rescue group for that specific breed of dog. then if you can't find one look at breeders. i just think its sad to contribute to the already way over populated dog population by breeding. but then again without this kind of breeding their would be no pure breds.
