1. Putting Kolams
Koalms are drawn on the doorsteps. Its a method of decoration. While it keeps a check towards the person just dashing into hous and making it unclean. Effect in three ways - has a psychological effect on the visitor, reminds one to mind their dirty feet or footwear while entering the house, reminds any visitor to knock the doors in case it is open.

2. Fastings
An effective way of dieting where one maintains its weight without losing its fitness. (No wonder most of the fasts are supposed to be for ladies)

3. Festivals
The essence to remind us of our culture. Each festival tells a story. Each story has a moral. We gotta remember these morals to lead a happy life.

4. Keeping Bindi
Application of bindi has relations with accupressure. The portion of the forehead where bindi is applied is a sensitive accupressure zone. Pressing that zone lightly for a few seconds daily helps in maintaining hormonal balance in a woman which are helpful with pregnancy. These days we use sticker bindis. In those early days, they used "Tika's". No wonder only married ladies are supposed to wear bindi's. The red colour of the bindi's is for the fact that red is the colour which ahuman eye catches the earliest. So whenever a person looks at a lady, he sees the bindi and understands that he is not supposed to try his luck out there.

5. Way of doing Marraiges
While one marries, it's neccessary to remind the pair how they have lead their life till date and how it's gonna change now onwards. The gotta understand the responsibilites and the commitments against each other. In the process of kanyadaan the father of the bride hands over his responsibilites against the bride to the groom and the groom accepts those responsibilites.

Highlights:
It was a very long process in those very early days to design a culture which could create a perrfect balance within the society. That was the Indian culture. Each and every aspect of the culture was technically designed and had a lot of releveance with the lifestyle and the basic fundamentals of life of a person.

Sad to say, gradually as time passed on by, the ethics got corrupt. The whole essence of the design was modified. The basic culture was actually missing. In thsi modern age, we consider as most of the ethics as useless and primitive. But if we really study our culture, we would actually find a lot of depth in it.

We cannot just ignore the concept designed by people who gave the first form of medicines to the world in form of ayurveda, who performed firsed ever surgery in history of mankind, who were the first ones to design the surgical tools, who were thorough with the concept of gyneacology, who were the people who believed that the earth was round a hundreds of years before copernicus could discover it, who gave the decimal number system to the world withoutr which all the progress that mankind has achieved would have been impossible, who laid the concept of the trigonomentry years before pythagoras could do it, and a lot more...

All the traditions were time tested practices. Unfortunately over a period of time we have forgotten their significance, followed as a ritual and deviated from the main themes.
1.Putting kolam: in olden days this was done with rice powder which will go as feed for ants aned other insects as their food. Now we use all sorts of colour powders and chemicals thinking it is for decoration.
2.Fasting: Earlier people used to fast on every Ekadasi, 11th day of lunar calender as fast. Patients, children and old people are exempted. This is to give rest to human body and its digestion system so that it can function effectively. Thus people used observe fast twice in a month. Even the present medical experts say eat in less quantities but number of times. This is not to tax the digestive system.
3. Festivals: They are observed whenever there is a change in the climatic conditions. I can not explain for all festivals due to place and time constrains. I will give few examples:
Ramnavami: This comes in Aril when summer sets in. People serve jaggery water which is good in preventing dehydration that may be caused during the summer.
Diwali: This comes when the rainy season is over and winter is to set in. Days become shorter and nights longer. All insects start coming. We light lamps to provide light during nights and to keep insects away.
Ganesh Chaturdhi: This comes during rainy season. One is expected to collect 21 types of leaves to worship Ganesha. All these leaves have medical significance.
Like this every festivsal was designed with significance. But we have forgotten their importasnce and introduced new concepts with modern gadgets.
Keeping Bindhi: This is the best way to identify a married lady.
Laadies are generally called weak sex to protect them being hypnotised this was prescribed. Gents are supposed to keep kunkum before taking their food. One can easily understand whether one had already taken food or to be oferred. This kunkum is made from turmeric powder which had medicinal value. Nowadays we have forgotten its significance and use stickers.
Marriages: Lot of importance was attached to marriage in Hindu family structure. If one really follow the ritual and the mantras chanted, their significance will be known. They contain lot of oaths and promises to be taken by the couple in conducting the family functions smoothly. Husband works outside and earns livelyhood. Wife manages the family affairs and distributes the benefits among all family members. During the ritual they cook food and offer to Fire who happenms to be their first guest to be fed. This signifies that they have to take care of the guests that come to their house.
In India we do not have any written documnet or registration but the relationships were never broken. For us the main witness is the holy Fire God. We used to take the bride and grrom in a procession to make the entire neighbour hood to know that they are wife and husband and others should not mistake when they move together.
Please remember every activity in Hindu system was introduced after careful study and with purpose. Unfortunately there are no people to explain their significance even if some one is there we have no patience to hear, understand and analyse. Either we blindly beleive or reject.
