At many major scholarly association conferences, it is MUCH easier to get your proposal accepted for presentation if you choose to do a poster session rather than a paper presentation.
This is because there are only so many panels, and only so much room on each one, but there is lots of space for poster presentations.
One really good reason to do a poster presentation is if your presentation is very visual in nature. Good poster presentations have lots of photos and other types of illustrations.
One negative in regard to poster presentations is that at SOME scholarly association conferences, poster presentations are not taken as seriously. I am not saying this is right, I am just pointing out that it is the case in some fields.

Their are no real pro's and con's in general. Relate it more to yourself. Do you relate better and can you explain better a picture when given or do you want a particular outline not to stray from? If you use a poster you can entertain the audience with pictures and graphed information. However if permitted you might be able to do so also with a paper presentation. How serious are you about this presentation? Are you willing to write up a paper pres. and also print out some pictures on clear slides for a projector or maybe even a flat board with pictures on it? Or would it be easier to just make a poster?
