The people who actually work backstage during a show are usually unionized employees of the theater building. If you are interested in the non-acting part of producing a show, that is technical theater and most universities that have a theater program should have, besides acting and directing, courses that provide education in stage set construction and design, makeup, costume construction and design, sound design, and other details of the work. Sorry, as my spelling shows, I am a stateside theater person, so can't be specific about UK

You wanna take a technical theatre course definitely. LIPA (Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts) has a good course, as does Central. Check out the list of accredited courses by the drama council....NCDT.
