What does your 11 year old like??
use it to your advantage..
I know that people these days say computer suck for kid but don't tell that to my 2 1/2 year old son..
He got these fake kiddie computers that have programs on them that teach them how to read, spell and math...
yes he is only 2 1/2 but he is already learning how to spell...he know several words already.
They sell them at Wal Mart and toys r us..
they don't cost that much they vary on what you or your child would want..
As they are playing game they forget that they are learning so it makes it even more fun.
I know i am using information from a 2 1/2 year old but if it can work that young i think it could help an 11 year old.
Just make it fun.
Try to make up games.
Like spelling contest for those words that they are bad on..
for every right answer they get you give then a nickle or something like that...
Just encourage and don't get frustrated at least don't let it show or it will just discourage your 11 year old..
GOOD LUCK

My kids can spell like the dickens. I will never forget I was driving with my 5 year old and she saw the word laser. She said. I swear to god. A s between two vowels sounds like Z. Then she said lazer. I about wrecked the car. Mom used phonics on both of them and they both spell like the dickens. There is also nothing like good old fashion practice. But my wife used phonics.
Worked great.

regular home spelling tests. You could give him 10 words for him to memorise and do the test on the next day.By end of the month he can control 150 words.By end of the year, 1800 words. You should try this at home.
