Why do people mix up nationality with ethnicity?

and get angry at another person because they don't say for exampe australian or american or canadian ( i have personal experience) for example some people won't accept that my ETHNICITY can be filipino- chinese- irish- french AND english and i think this is stupid because i am proud of all my ethnicities and when people say "oh you can't be all of the those 'natios' at the same time" i am sick of this because i know that my nationality is AUSTRALIAN but my ethnicity isn't, sorry if my question doesn't make sense.... well thanks for your time anyway!

Usually nationality and ethnicity go hand in hand if you are born in another country. Being from America I understand what you are saying since we do have a lot of people who consider themselves American but are of different ethnic backgrounds. Many people dont realize that there is really a difference. It may be a lack of knowledge.

People just need to be educated, but also, some will be offended by it, others won't, some will correct the mix-up, others won't. Having a healthy diversity of ethnicity and nationality will result in a diversity of reactions to it. Diversity, being generally a healthy thing for the whole planet, is deserving of tolerance. The offender and the offendee must both learn to tolerate. Wouldn't it get boring if no one noticed what an unusual mix you are? Don't you enjoy claiming something so rare? If people didn't mix it up, it would get dull very fast.

No, it is not a stupid question and it does make sense--- find intelligent people to hang around with and you won't have to be annoyed by their ignorance.
