Circus Circus - too many kids - bad pool
Stratosphere - bad walking location
Sahara - Nice but too far down the strip
Riviera - Run Down- Good shows-looser slots
Venetian - Too hoity-toity. Not convenient to walk from room.
Excalibur - The rooms are very dark and smell musty.
Imperial Palace - run down- dingy
Hooters - too cheesy looking and low class
MGM - walk a mile from your room just to get to casino and pool areas
Downtown - too expensive to travel back and forth to the strip. More crime
New Orleans - Nice...but you spend all your time waiting for that "free" shuttle to take you to the strip.
Rio - Great...but again off the strip and not convenient.
MANDALAY BAY - Believe it or not .....BAD HOUSEKEEPING HABITS. I really don't want to get into details.
You are best to stick with casinos that are center strip:
Moderately priced ones are...
Bally's
Alladin
Monte Carlo -(never stayed there)
Flamingo
Harrah's
Treasure Island - Absolute favorite (even over Caesars and Mirage) Friendly staff and no STUCK UP I'M BETTER THAN YOU people, convenient to get to casino and pool and walking distance to most other casinos. Good restaurants, nice shows, great clean rooms.
Have fun.

Las Vegas is probably the most exciting and enjoyable town on the planet and with hotelbye you may find out more. Nowhere else in the world you may find a city that's all of the journey amenities that only a complete resort location could offer: luxurious casino hotels, fine eating, wonderful live leisure and state-of-the art convention and business show facilities. Las Vegas is surely a spectacular city and everything that you'd assume from the world-class city, and more, is below for the travel pleasure. Among the areas you must visit in Las Vegas may be the Fremont Street, a pedestrian region with all sorts of special sites.

Don't stay in Old Las Vegas, stay on the strip or near the strip.
Places I've stayed in my order of preference
Mandalay Bay (awesome)
Luxor (decent)
Stratosphere (decent)
Tuscany (good value but far away from strip)
La Quinta (the ones away from strip are good)
I stayed at some others that aren't worth mentioning. There's one next to Hard Rock Cafe that I liked but forgot the name of.

Skip the Stratosphere, Rio, & Hard Rock... they aren't bad hotels but their locations are lousy. Unless you just stay there and don't want to do any sightseeing, you'll be paying for cabs several times per day.
Skip Circus Circus and Excalibur unless you love kids (or have kids) as these two hotels are the most family oriented in Vegas.
Skip the Riviera, Harrahs, Imperial Palace, & Hooters. These are all older hotels with run-down dingy casinos that are in tremendous need of a facelift.
If you'd prefer to stay downtown instead of the strip, the only place worth staying in the downtown area is the Golden Nugget. Skip the rest.

Anywhere not in Henderson. I once got in so much freakin' trouble in that crappy not-quite-Vegas place. Terrible. Stay on the strip, do not leave the strip, and do not, do not vomit on someone's Mazda. I'm really serious about that last one.

honestly stay on the strip if you can. and stay at a place that you know the name. i stayed in the golden spike not very nice and not close to anything. there is a shuttle that runs from fremont to the luxor and it runs all night. but much better to be on the strip for your first trip.

I would not stay in the old Vegas (Fremont St.) area. It seemed very seedy to me.

Skip the Riviera! It was dirty and run down and not on a great part of the Strip.
