I'm in Cali and I've done it a couple times, but not much. I've only done it when it's become unbearably hot or I've made the mistake of trying to squeeze into some killer heels. The weather in Cali is generally warm to hot, but people don't really do that out here, so I think that is a Florida or Southern thing. I remember there was a question on my driver's written test that asked if it was illegal to drive barefoot and I answered "no", I got the question right.

I don't drive, but I am a full-time barefooter and I happen to know that driving barefoot is NOT illegal in the US. This is a persistant myth that everyone 'knows' and even some cops believe it is, however it's not... if you ever get ticketed for it don't just pay without questioning anything, but let it go to court, they'll throw it out.

=============
The most common argument against barefoot driving is that a pebble or a piece of glass could be lodged in the brake pedal and if you had to come down hard on it, you'd pull back. Well, that may be if you're a tenderfoot who never walks barefoot but only took of a pair of (high heel) shoes to drive... but as a full-time barefooter I wouldn't be worried about that, I run across gravel all the time and also thorny bushes are no problem even if I come down hard on them. Also, you could only get something stuck in there if you'd carried it in on a shoe sole, on a bare sole stuff like that doesn't cling so much.

Not usually but I have on occasion. I've never even been to the South.
I have met people who consider flip flops to be barefoot when driving and insist on wearing regular shoes instead.

I'm a native to Arizona. Drive barefoot all the time, otherwise I can't feel the pedals as well (probably because I'm just used to it). Maybe it's wierd, I don't know!

I prefer to drive barefoot instead of driving when I'm wearing high heels. So I just take off my shoes and I'm off! Btw, I'm from Virginia.

i have seen mostly women drive barefoot. even in my country pakistan.
the reason behind which i find out is
-- women usually wear heels and its difficult to have full control on brake or accelerator. but it can overcome if u practiced it since ur first day driving
-- second reason can b usually women when they learn drive they start learning bare foot to have feeling for example how much brake need to b pressed in order to slow car etc.
-- third is, women usually fear of driving. esp when u see the kind of traffic we have in karachi, ....overtaking is not a problem, and those who strickly follow the traffic rules ended up with accidents.
these r some of my observations...

I think it is more a warm weather thing.
I drive barefoot frequently in the summer. If I am running a quick errand around town like returning a video or getting gas, I don't even bother to put shoes on. If I am taking a trip, I'll sometimes take shoes/socks off and just drive in my bare feet. It is more comfortable.
People drive barefoot all the time in summer here, especially out by the lake. People arrive barefoot and put their boats in the water, spend the day barefoot on their boats, and hook them back up to their cars barefoot and drive off.
I agree that there are no rules against driving barefoot in the US. Southerns do this a lot simply because they live in a warmer climate.
