I have been invited to an interview to become a PhD student at University of California Irvine at the end of the month and would like to hear from some people who are students at UCI or work there. I currently live in Australia.

The only UC with better weather is UC San Diego. City is super safe. City is also pretty upscale. South Coast Plaza is a nearby mall that is VERY nice. Very pleasant place in general.

Can feel a bit antiseptic though. Not a wild and wooly place if that's what you're looking for. As a PhD student, I'm guessing the lack of keg parties and drunken students everywhere won't be too much of a negative.

My answer would depend in part on which PhD program you're pursuing. In addition to wonderful weather, safety, and surroundings, UCI has some really excellent academic programs. It's among the best in the hard sciences (its professors and researchers have won an impressive number of Nobel prizes considering the young age of the school -- it rivals most of the other UCs by this count) and in English.

I completed my undergrad at UCI in Humanities and Social Sciences (double major). In the Humanities, I loved that the small program sizes meant so much interaction between students and professors. One of my upper level courses had only four students.

In the Social Sciences, the breadth of courses was amazing, and the professors were all very good at teaching and were published in their fields.

I had a lot of friends in the hard sciences, and they had similarly good experiences.

Good luck! It's a great school and a wonderful place to live. I had to leave the state for graduate school but have already accepted a job offer to return to Orange County because I fell in love with Irvine while I was there.

well just to give you some information. Orange county where irvine is located in is surrounded by a large population of asians mostly vietnamese mostly known as "Little Saigon" So UCI will have many asian people and dont be surprised, i assume around 70% asian. Otehr than that irvine is a nice campus. the weather is nice everyday it is hot 20 to 25 degress celsius everyday. Irvine the city itself is ok but somewhat expensive. But I think you hvae fun in UC San Diego or UC Los Angeles which both are located in good areas and good neighborhoods have good weather and is more racially diverse and reputed then UCI. But a PhD doesnt matter where you get it I guess. I hope this helps
