Perhaps only if the "owner" is irresponsible. These dogs do have a terrible reputation. It could be a combination of the breed, & the people who own them. Pit bulls have definitely turned on their owners, & have killed innocent people. I would NEVER want to own one.

It is not at all irresponsible to own a pit bull. The media has had a feeding frenzy on any case where there is an attack but keep in mind that other breeds do that too, they just don't make the news as readily.
Also, it is not the breed that is to blame but irresponsible owners who are to blame. Why not penalize irresponsible breeders and owners instead of the breed? Responsible breeders make sure their pups are placed in suitable homes.
Many times the strays that attack are abandoned and starving or have escaped a home where they have been taught to fight or teased to bite and make them "bad".
I own a dog that is mostly Pit and she is very gentle and loving. She is great with kids. I also have a Golden Retriever mix who is great with kids but she will snap if they are behaving badly around her. The Pit will not bite. She has a high tolerance to pain and will not bite.
I wouldn't leave any small kid around a dog of any breed without supervision. That is irresponsible.
So I am for stopping the breeders who are indiscriminate about breeding or breed to produce fighting dogs. Those fighting dogs are tortured and abused to make them mean. They are put on heavy chains with bricks and tires to pull. They are fed things that burn so they will get real upset. They are encouraged to kill.
Some people who don't fight them, get them because they want a bad dog, so they do lesser forms of torture to have a mean dog. Any dog will snap due to this.
The dog that took the lady in France' face off was a Labrador Retriever. There are incidents where dogs of any given breed have attacked their owner or snapped and hurt someone.
Usually there is a physical cause for this like a brain lesion or something.

Actually, there are quite a few breeds of pit bulls, and I don't think it's irresponsible to own one unless you choose not to train her. Pit bulls as a general breed have a lower attack percentage than lots of other types of dogs. They get a bad name because of the viciousness of their attacks. But it's more likely to get attacked by a Golden than it is a Pit.
There are magazines specifically for Pit owners, and you might be able to find some more information there. But, if you're ready to be a dog owner, pit bulls can be great pets, provided you take the time and effort to help them become social, kind members of your family.

it's not irresponsible to own a pit bull
but irresponsible people shouldn't own any breed of dog.
any dog is what you make it become.
do some research you will see that pit attacks don't happen as often as other attacks from other breeds. it's just in the media more often cuz of stereo type. ex:: german shephard attacks so n so... doesn't sound as bad as pit bull attacked so so...
you hear about planes going down all the time on the news too but does that mean that all planes crash and you should never fly in one?

no, the sweetest dogs i ever met have been pit bulls. in contrast though the most vicious one have been as well. pit bulls get a bad rap cause they is killers. cocker spaniels bite as many people but you can probably get up and walk away. just don't be irresponsible with taking care of a pit bull, or any dog for that matter, and chances are they will do nothing but love you.

I think that owning a certain animal does not make you irresponsible, it's how you care for it that does. Actually i am planning on adopting a pit bull b/c i think they get a bad rap because low lifes think it entertaining to watch them tear each other a part. there's no such thing as a mean dog only cruel owners. also some people don't like the breed because of their jaw pressure when great Pyrenees and other large breed dogs exceed that jaw pressure.

It's irresponsible only if you do not train the dog and raise it in a manner so it's not aggressive. Pit Bulls are not necessarily dangerous if they're raised right - but they can be very dangerous.
This could be said of any dog, though - they all have the capacity to be dangerous, though some breeds are more aggressive and require a stronger-willed owner/handler.

i believe it is like raising kids, treat them well teach them right from wrong and they will turn out fine,
there are sometimes exceptions i.e. i believe all the pedigree inbreeding causes genetic trouble my friend had a pure bred English bull terrier no matter wot you did to the dog it would not listen when it missed behaved my friend tried all the techniques i.e. clickers, whistle for training and it was just so brain dead it didn't even know it's name she ended up having to give it up because you just could not control it, my mum has a mixed staffordshire bull terrier and sharpei, and she's the most intelligent dog we have ever had, and she is a soppy as anything shes like a giant puppy.
i feel that a lot of people get fighting dogs to use as protection from burglers etc and they are raised to be a bit vicious or they would be no good at there job.

I dont think so I just think that since they are 'mean dogs' Some owners think that they are soppoused to be treated mean so I would say That the owners are the irrespondsible ones. I have known people with the nicest pit bulls!

a pit bull is like any other dog. it has to be trained properly in order for it to make a good pet. i think that if you don't have the time to train them properly than you shouldn't own them. also if you can't keep them in a fenced in yard you need to take extra precautions with them out in the yard. so i guess my answer is if you are going to be an irresponsible owner than yes it is.

OK come on guys, i think that it is NOT irresponsible to own a pit bull, but it is irresponsible to treat them badly. the way they are raised has sooooo much to do with it. if you love them they are gonna love you but if you beat them and treat them poorly they very well attack. maybe the owners should be blamed for their OWN dog attacking them!!!
