It's really up to you, having never written a line of code in Java, and being a C# fanatic, I highly recommend C#, but you really could go either way. From what I understand both are very similar. Last I heard, C# programmers were getting paid more and it seems like there are more C# jobs out there, so I would go with that. C# is also an international standard (and Java isn't) so look for the greatest international support for that platform.

C# only runs in the world of Microsoft. If you're coding exclusively for that, than you don't need to worry.

The significant advantage of Java, at least in theory, is that you can write your code once and it can run anywhere with only very minor modifications. Want to write code for the MacOS that will also run on a Windows box, Sun Solaris, any of several Linux distributions, and any other platform which has a JVM built for it? The prospects of Java are really quite cool. In its infancy, it proved to be just that, prospects, but as I understand it, java has matured quite a bit over the last few years and is now being used in as many platforms (and then some) as had originally been envisioned. The really cool part about java is that it is not just built for use with computers. Its also built for potential use (and is getting some as I've recently been reading) with a large number of other everyday (and not-so-everyday) devices. Undoubtedly, C# will eventually be replaced. (Microsoft doesn't like technology to stick around for a long time. Its far more profitable for them to introduce new things for programmers and users to learn and rankle with and then release multitudinous software upgrades and patches to fix problems as they become publically known.) Java probably will not be replaced, although it will continue to receive updates and fine-tuning.

Personally, I've never worked with either language seriously, but I've read a good bit about both. I'll add that my bias is typically against most things that Microsoft does, but I have no bias in favor of Sun Microsystems.

My Preference is for JAVA among the Two,because it's proved as the best language for internet world.

One more thing, opportunities are more & you can find drastic growth rate in this field once you are thorough with the subject.

All the best.
