I am glad I asked, I understand much better now, really, good answers...it makes more sense to me, I don't think I am the only one though confused by the mixed message that it sends...don't allow any racial or other slurs in my home and my grown children reflect that..so theres two at least who won't stoop to it...

Actually in the African-American community it is debated back and forth about whether or not African-Americans should use the n-word or not. The people who use it state that it is a way of reclaiming the word and removing the negative meaning from it. The people who don't use it state that it is not right for the community to use a word that was used to keep the community down for years. To use the word amongst the community is to perpetuate the negative connotations that go along with the word... that it is ignorant to use that word.

But white people should never use the word when talking about African-Americans whether African-Americans use it or not. What it comes down to is who is using the word... the target of oppression or the agent of oppression? Even though you nor I were ever slaveholders, we belong to the larger group that was the agent of oppression for many many years. Us using the word is us forcing that oppression back on people. If the target of oppression uses the n-word then it carries different meaning. But even then the use of the word among the target of oppression is hotly debated within the African-American community, like I stated above.

The use of the words cracker or breeder are wrong. But they are used by targets of oppression to express frustration with the dominant culture of white heterosexuals. This makes it a different connotation than when a white person uses the n-word. Now it still doesn't make it right. People who use those words should be confronted about it because calling anyone such charged terms is completely wrong. But it IS different than me or you using the n-word.

It would be like if you had friends who jokingly called one another rednecks. We as white people even have a white comedian whose popularity is based on his stereotypes of rednecks! But someone who is not white calling a white person a redneck would most likely piss that white person off.

So whatever you believe about these sorts of terms: the n-word, cracker, breeder, the f-word... basically if you don't belong to that group of people don't use the word. And if you hear someone not of that group say that word then call them out on it.

I don't think you should be worrying too much about what's fair and what's not fair. The bottom line is that any type of racial slur is ignorant and shouldn't be tolerated. If you feel like someone says something to you that you feel is a racial slur, then call them out on it and stand up for yourself. The reason that black people are a lot more outspoken about the issue is because their people were abused and dragged around in shackles for over 400 years. That is why it becomes an OJ trail. Maybe one day people will all get over this but apparently, not in our generation- not just yet. All we can do is change our own responses and reactions to ignorance. And we can't do a damn thing about anyone else's.

The N word is just a word, but it is one that has a history of being used in an offensive manner. It is one of those words which it is safer not to use if you do not wish to give offense.
Sure there is a double standard but so what. When you are speaking of yourself you will possibly use terms which you would find offensive if somebody else applied them to you. Language is governed by context and the meaning of a word needs to be considered within that context. If in doubt, pick another word.

It has a different meaning and is kinda like an "inside joke" for African Am. to say to each other. You just need to let others know what offends you to those people who are saying things you don't like.
It IS a double standard, but that's why we need to educate each other on what is correct. Racism in any way by any group is just ignorant.
You are not ignorant, so it's probably hard to see why other people cannot just be considerate. BUT think...typing your question just educated others!

The use of any offensive word is wrong in my opinion. I don't like being called names by anyone and I certainly don't like using the words myself.

Ya know, no matter who says it the words aren't exactly clean. Just avoid them altogether and ignore the dirty mouths like you would any other category of profanity.

i totally agree.. if black's don't want to be referred to as an N, then they shouldn't use the same term to discribe themselves..
