My friend (well not really he's a jerk and i don't even like him) told me that "more stupid" is the correct way to say it, but i looked online and got mixed reviews saying that sometimes if it's a one syllable word u have to use more/most but sometimes if it's more than one syllable and sounds normal than you can say "er/est". I just don't know and i wanna prove him wrong cause he's a douche. I think that stupider sounds perfectly fine, more stupid souds...well...stupid to me haha.

Sorry, but the correct form is "more stupid" -- that is, if you want to be a stickler.... and you don't have to be if you don't wanna!

Your own research bears this out: One syllable adjectives take "-er/-est". Adjectives with more than one syllable take more/most (eg., more beautiful). There are exceptions to the one syllable rule, such as happy (happier). Unfortunately, stupid isn't one of them. Having said that, there are those who use "stupider", albeit incorrectly.

So, if you really, REALLY want to win the argument, you might do it based on the fact that "stupider" is coming into increasingly common usage and some would regard it as a part of the English lexicon.

Your "jerk" friend is technically correct. If you did something stupid, but he did something that was worse, it's called "more stupid."

BUT - in today's vernacular - Conversation would allow you to say "stupider" because it's accepted as one of those words we use, anyway, even if it's not correct.

If you were writing something, you'd want it to be correct, so I'd recommend you use a different word that means stupid (sillier, unintelligent, dumber, goofier, etc.) .

If you were writing conversation in your story, article, etc. I'd go with "stupider" since that's what most people say!

It's sort of like when someone calls on the phone and says, "Is John there?" and John says, "This is me." That's what we say.

What is technically correct is "This is he." Which sounds really snobby, and not the way we talk.

More stupid sounds better to me and I don't recall ever hearing the word stupider, however I've heard people say "that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard."
Stupid, more stupid, and stupidest doesn't sound like a logical progression, so I would say stupider is probably OK. Is my answer stupider than anyone else's?
By the way, I (as usual) just used the spell checker and it did not flag stupider or stupidest.

Well, if it isn't a word, it ought to be. I use it all the time, myself, and haven't been called on it yet.

I can't see why you can't use it like it really is a word even if the popular view says it isn't.

I like it and I am going to just have to sound stupider, I guess.

You can bet that if there are any politically correct word policemen out here, they will try to straighten us out properly. LOL

This is one of those areas where English goes all wonky. If the word is more than one syllable and does not end in "y", you don't use the "er" ending. So: big- bigger, hairy- hairier, stupid- more stupid. I guess we just don't like how "stupider" sounds? There are probably exceptions; there are _always_ exceptions. This is not a language we speak; it is a mish-mash of German, Latin, French, and whatever else we got our hands on.

"More stupid" is the correct way to say it. It can get confusing- some words like that end in "er", others "more".

No, sorry, it's not a word. However, if I were you, when you go to school tomorrow just tell him that you knew all along that it wasn't a word you were just testing to see how smart he was !! I reckon that will keep him quiet for a while.

Whether or not "more stupid" sounds stupid to you, it's still grammatically correct.
