for 1 dozen cloth diapers ( When I bought them 3 years ago) was about $10 a dozen- depending upon the quality.-(cheapo, rectangular, have to use 2 when older- 1 when younger)
If you are a stay at home mom on a budget (As I was with kid #1) cloth is FANTASTIC- just do it right.
buy a box of those liners- they are worth it. They separate the baby from the wet, and allow the clean up of fecal matter much easier. you only pay $3 for 100- so they are worth every penny.
Buy the plastic covers of course.
(I used disposable until he was older then 1 month due to rash- but after that- cloth all the way)
cloth dry in a snap on the line, and saved so much money it was fantastic.
Now- when the baby hits 6 months and wants to crawl- they tend to be cumbersome- you can try something else- if you are good at sewing...
You can sew cloth diapers that are shaped like the commerical ones with Velcro strips.
This is how the commerical service ones look like- but wait until the baby is at 6 months- or by the time you are done sewing- he's grown out of them.
When you make them- make them a little big so he can use them longer- and only use them during the wakie-time and use the bulky rectangular ones when he sleeps.

Way back when disposables came about, my daughter was a baby. I tried cloth diapers and yuk, what a stinky ugly mess.

depends on what kind you get, don't get the gerber prefolds at walmart, they really suck!
here's a link to reviews of different prefolds (I'm assuming this is what you are talking about, there's tons of different kinds of cloth diapers but prefolds are the cheapest) http://www.diaperpin.com/diapers/itemlist.asp?subcat=PREFOLD you can find stores that sell them off that link, shop around and you can find deals or free shipping. I like using bummis covers over the prefolds, really easy to use!
