Amitabh joined politics at the insistence of Rajiv Gandhi. He was elected to the parliament from Allahabad. Those were the days when he and Rajiv were chums. But this friendship was misinterpreted by V P Singh in a low grade manner. This led to broil and then came up Bofors deal. These two incidents had their toll on the friendship and finally Amitabh fell out of the grace of Sonia Gandhi. The reasons are too obscure.
Out of sheer frustration Amitabh resigned from the Lok Sabha. And when pestered by some corners, he thought it was worthwhile to join SP as its party spokesperson happened to his friend. In India it is better to have some kind of political leverage. It works to your advantage. Amitabh reluctantly joined the SP, probably as an antidote to his maltreatment in the congress party. From the core of his heart he is not a politician. He is an actor par excellence, and there is a niche that he has carved out which cannot be filled by others. It is all due to his talent and hard work.

Amitabh had already entered politics. He conteseted election from allahabad constituency. However not being sucssesful he quit his political career. He still maintains the stand not to enter politics again.
Politically he is seen in proximity with Samajwadi Party chief Mr Amar Singh and may people link him with the party. Mr Bacchan However states him as a friend. Mr Bacchan also shared good rapport with Congress in the 80's.
Mr Bacchans wife Jaya Bacchan is a Rajya Sabha MP from Samajwadi Party.
