Whatever information you can get your hands on. Mostly books, so you can read when you want, and be able to flip back and forth. Take a welding class, you will be surprised what you don't know. There's more to it than sticking two peices of metal together. You might want to learn gas welding as well. It's not used for structural work much anymore, and seems to be a fading art.
As you search for information, let your mind go free. As your imagination drives you, it will also lead you.

Spend time learning about what's been done before. Figure out which types of custom bikes you like the most, then figure out how you want to offer something different. Go to as many shows as you can, read about and watch shows on ones you can't get to. Know what's exciting to you, and figure out each aspect of different genres that you feel might fit into your chosen area. Willie D. revived a company on spirit, not necessarily being the best or the fanciest.
There are plenty of technical shops that can bolt you together pieces to call it a custom. There are few that are truly original in thought and creativity.
I agree about spending school time in graphics and design related arenas. You can learn a lot from others and other's mistakes.
Good luck!

Building engines is easy...The true art is welding and and eye for design.
Go to school and get certified in MIG (gmaw) TIG (gtaw) also learn geometry. You will need to know X Y and Z axis for machining on a CNC MILL, CNC plasma or CNC waterjet.

MAJ III,
You'll need to save up all of your hard earned money first of all. Then start buying some of those Chopper/HD magazines for some ideas.

electrical systems and drivetrains, if you build it you should paint it as well, unless you want a wild custom paint job. Read up on painting cause painting a bike is easy.
