I do both even though I don't as much as I used to, because my hands get cramped and stiff.

There are a few things that are MUCH easier to do by machine than hand (repeatable buttonholes and invisible zippers, for instance), and a number of things that are easier for a newbie to do by hand than by machine (blindhem, for instance). Haute couture garments, the ones by the big name designers that are one of a kind and sold for $$$$$$$$$$, are sewn almost entirely by hand... the exception being that some designers now allow straight seams to be sewn by a straight stitch sewing machine. I started hand sewing when I was 3, and started machine sewing when I was 5 -- the first 35 years I sewed, I had only a straight stitch sewing machine that wouldn't even do buttonholes. And I've made a ton of clothes, camping gear, tents, several wedding dresses, coats, jackets, and suits over the years. Sew in a way that makes you happy. If you decide to try machine sewing, pick a machine that works the way you want to. Particularly, a used straight stitcher is pretty simple and cheap.

That is exactly the same for me! I can do both but I have to give up on projects that take a lot of strength. The last item was a fuzzy pink bed for my little dog. Before that I made 2 pillows using poodle fur fabric in aqua. I broke 3 ribs on the right side so I can feel a lot of pain if I move too much. Now I am using my journal to sketch projects that I will try in the future. Best of luck on your hands. I rub my hands with olive oil each day, a couple of times, and I feel a real difference.

I use to sew everything by hand till I developed carpal-tunnel syndrome. Now I have to use the machine unless I am just darning something or fixing a hem.
Hope your hands don't get much worse.
Sometimes I have a hard time on here because of the cts.

BOTH -- in fact, I make my own Halloween Costumes every year -- and did so as a Long Term Single Parent for both of my children as well. Now they are adults living on their own, and who knows if they will ever pick up the skills that I have. (Although my daughter does some hand sewing).

I sew by hand, inherited a machine, but don't know how to work it... but people are always so impressed by what I make by hand, I'm almost afraid it would lose something by using a machine...

Wish I did. Can't sew worth a lick. I crochet though.

Try reflexology for your hands. It's a wonderful massage and therapeutic also.

Darn the socks by hand with a light bulb inside, so, by hand or is that sew?
