As many pets as they can handle and as many as it legal in their city and apartment if that's applicable. Many cities have laws limiting what kind of animals and what types of animals are allowed in city limits and I've never seen an apartment complex that doesn't limit the number and types of animals. You should also take into account your own situation. How much time do you have? How much experience with pets? Do you really want one, or another one? I would suggest waiting a few weeks at least after deciding to get a pet before performing the actual search and take your time when selecting your pet to make sure he or she is suited to you.

Most people seem to do fine with 1 or 2. I wish I could get another dog, but that's really not feasible right now, so I simply enjoy my one dog, Luna.

I think a person should have as many pet as he/she can properly take care of. We have one dog 4 bird which are have laid eggs, 10 hermit crabs, and 2 fish tanks. I take in abandon pets for short periods of time when they need it. My children have learned a lot about these pets.

Let's see. . .legalities have been covered. . .and the ability to provide medical treatement as needed. . .By the way a sick pet can be extremely expensive and as its owner you have the responsibility to pay for it all. . .How much time do you have? Each pet you have needs time for care plus time for affection. . .I don't think too many. I have taken in way too many pets and I feel badly that I don't have the time to spend with each as I would like. But had I not taken them in, they would have died a pretty agonizing death or picked up by the pound and executed. So I take them in, do the best I can, and look for homes. . .All you can. . .

Ideally- None. Would YOU want to be someone's "pet" ? A human's emotional "scapegoat" to love or abuse as they see fit? -Eating the SAME food for days, weeks, -or even YEARS on end? Dropped off at the Pound, the side of the road, -or WORSE -when having you around is no longer "convenient"? ...OK- so you say that YOU would never treat an animal "like that"... -But knowing the odds that that happens at the hands of humans, -would you readily want to randomly walk in any pet's "paws" -to see what it was "like"? WE can choose our pets, but they have no choice of Owners...

I have 3 dogs, 2 ferrets & a cat. Several people say I have too many. I feel that as long as the house is clean, the animals are fed & properly taken care, & all animals are up to date on their shots then it is up to the individual. All people will have a different amount that is right for them.

As many as you can care for. Hoarding is a real problem and that shouldn't be encouraged but if you are able to take care of as many as you want, then animals can only benefit. There are way too many homeless animals that need a temporary place to call home and if you are able to provide for them, then go for it!
