A DNS Domain is to join a Domain Group of a network. This would be the IP Address of the Machine that is hosting the domain. I am assuming the other you are mentioning is the Gateway, which is the IP Address of the Router that gives you the connection to the internet, or beyond that router.

The DNS is the "Domain Naming Service" It is the computer that converts an ip address like
192.168.3.4 to one that may make more sense to humans such as www.yahoo.com
The other domain server is, like you said, used for logging in.
