A rocket with a mass of 1.2 x103 kg is scheduled to lift-off from a launch pad with an acceleration of 25 m/s2. What upward force must be externally applied to cause this acceleration?

can someone explain this one to me

find the Fnet first
Fnet = ma
Fnet = (1.2x10^3kg)(25m/s^2)
Fnet = 30,000N

Fnet = Fapply - Fweigh

Fweigh = mg
Fweigh = (1.2x10^3kg)(9.8)
Fweigh = 11,760N

30,000 = Fapply - 11,760N
Fapply = 41,760N

F = m a, where force is wanted, and both the mass and acceleration are given. To the specified acceleration must be added the acceleration due to gravity, as the rocket engine must overcome this as well as lifting the vehicle.

the equation you need to use would be F=M x A where F is Force, M is Mass, and A is accelleration. your answer will be in Newtons. so that would be F = 1.2 x 10^3 (your mass) x 25 m/s (accelleration). the total force that is needed to move this rocket is 30 000 newtons of force.
