Why did those people who don't know what a Taler is bother to answer? It is worth approximately the spot value of one ounce of silver. Currently, that's about $13.

The Maria Theresa silver thaler is one of the world's most famous and beautiful silver coins. It was the currency of Austria and her empire, and was also widely used as trade 'dollar' for other parts of the world including Middle East and Far East during the 18th century till as late as early 20th century. The latter being counterstamped versions. The Maria Theresa Taler has been continuously restruck using 1780 dies till the present day in Vienna, and many other world major mints also producing this coin at certain periods of time. There has been at least 800 million of this taler minted since 1780. This taler has a silver finess of 0.833, and contains 0.752 oz of pure silver, roughly 23.4g. Modern restrikes in uncirculated, full luster condition can be easily purchased for around $13-$15. Proof versions available for around $20.

Silverpet gave you most of the info on this coin, there is little to add. It didn't really circulate much in the Far East, South East Asia or the Orient in general, for the Spanish 8 Reales "piece of eight" beat it out. The 1780 Maria Theresa Thaler, did play a big role during world war one. The values she gave you are right. As I remember there is a book out there on it, or one in the works. I guess there are some differences on some of the coins and they can be dated and the mint can be identified on some coins.

They were minted with a fixed date until 1953 and are only worth silver bullion value of a little over $10, unless they are rare or really nice specimens.
