Nicolaus Copernicus (February 19, 1473 – May 24, 1543) was the astronomer who formulated the first modern heliocentric (sun is center of universe) theory of the solar system.
Copernicus formulated the first modren theory, but the heliocentric model is found in several Vedic Sanskrit texts composed in ancient India before the 7th century BC, well over 1000 years before Copernicus.

Nicolaus Copernicus
1473–1543
The Polish astronomer Copernicus was the first to theorize that Earth orbits the Sun. This meant the Sun and not Earth was the center of our universe—a controversial idea that was at first strongly denounced. This sun-centered theory is called the heliocentric theory (helios means Sun in Greek).
