I've never really thought of Goths as satanic or whatever, even with all the negative hype people give them... I've simply thought of them as people... it wasn't until I got to high school that I started seeing "Goths," so the other theories of "just a phase" may very well be true... and as far as the "just seeking attention" theories go, are they really looking for attention more than the big-mouthed football jocks that talk trash and give teachers hell, etc? Finally, in regards to the "just plain wierd" portion of your question, I think everybody's wierd in some way (I certainly am waaaaaaaaaaaaay out there...) Are goths wierder than everyone else? I've no idea...but probably not...
just as a note, I think people misunderstand Satanism as much as they misunderstand Goths, wallflowers, so on... I've been told by a friend who's talked to a "true" Satanist, as well as read relatively non-biased sources online, that satanism is NOT worship of the devil directly, it's simply about rebelling against the ideals of Christianity...

Back in the 1980s, when I was a teenager, we had LOTS of goths. That's when the whole thing got its START, in fact -- so don't think being goth is anything new right now. *grin* It's about 20 years old, but "everything old is new again" as the saying goes.
Anyway, I was not aware of ANY of the goths from my junior high and high school days being Satanic. They were not looking for another religion. And they certainly weren't evil; many of them got fairly good grades and were very nice/cool people if you gave them a chance and actually talked with them. :) Without PREJUDGING them!
They were just experimenting with a culture, style and/or identity that was very different from "normal," which is what a lot of teens do. (I don't mean a lot of teens become goths; I mean a lot of teens experiement with their style and identity in SOME way.) For most, it is just a phase.
I hope this helps. :)

Most goths are not real goths first of all. They are posers, they don't know what a real goth is. Goth these days is becoming more a fashion statment rather then an way of being. I knew a few in high school and they were pretty cool, they are just withdrawn, and because society does not understand them they are given a bad name. People tend to fear what they don't understand.

i do like the way some goths dress, pretty rebellious, if only they use that rebellion to change the world then i would have really made them number one in all the popular categories, but theyre so emotional, if only they are with life and there are too many goths right now....too many i can no longer appreciate

I became friends with 2previously goths, they ended up being pretty cool people (I'm not a goth myself). sometimes its just a phase.
I wouldn't say all are satanic, but just weird.

I think that "goths" are just human like the rest of us. I really don't see why people feel the need to label others and separate them into groups. We're all human aren't we?

Its amazing how many people really screw up the goth lifestyle...
I bet if you saw me on the street with my son, you woudl have NO clue that I am truly goth on the inside..(because i wear pink..:D)
Oh well, I guess one can chalk it up to all the loser teens who fit the steryotype and make it worse for those who really want to follow the lifestyle without being made fun of...

Just another person who didn't have enough attention growing up. Now they dress weird and out of the ordinary so people will look at them. They now crave any attention and it doesn't matter if it is negative or not. So people will say, whoa did you see that dude, he looks like something out of Hellraiser.

It depends on if they are just dressing the part to fit in with someone or to just be different, but if they are beyond that, they are playing with fire and need to keep thier wits about them or get get steered in the wrong direction simply for the sense of wanting to fit in somewhere. and can be seriously misguided by someone of stronger evil spirt
