Stay away from toy breeds. They can easily be hurt if handled too roughly and even a fall from the height of a toddlers arms can break a leg.

Stay away from terriers. They are very independent minded and will get sulky if scolded unjustly. They are not good dogs for first time dog owners.

There is something to be said for the all-American Heinz 57 (a mutt) but with kids I would recommend a purebred, you know how big they get, what problems they might have, and what temperament they'll have. It's all about predictability.

Labs are good dogs, but due to their popularity you have to do some real research to find a reputable breeder.

You might want to get a grown dog. Some breeders have retired dams and studs they'd be willing to adopt out. The advantages of a grown dog are that they're usually house-trained, they've outgrown the puppy-crazies, and have had some training. You could also check breed rescue orginizations

Working dogs are usually people friendly (shepherds ranging in size from corgis to sheepdogs; hunting dogs; etc) but they need to be kept stimulated to be happy.

We had a poodle when we were growing up. She was a very tolerant dog.

One of the best breeds with kids (if you can deal with the size and attendant issues of appetite and shedding) are Newfoundlands. These gentle giants will tolerate a lot of rib thumping and ear pulling. They were bred to help pull in fishing nets and to facilitate water rescues. They are very devoted to their kids and keep out a watchful eye.

Hope this helps

For a big dog..i would go with a golden retriever or lab. They seem to have the best temperament. I have also noticed that male dogs are more gentle too. For a smaller dog, I would recommend a Jack Russell terrier. They can a bit stubborn at times but are very fun and athletic family dogs. They are very trainable and smart. They are also very tough and can handle the extremely rough play of a toddler. All in all though, any dog that is raised right around children can turn out to be great. I know some pit bulls that have turned out to be the best dogs because they were raised right. but if you have no experience with the personality of a pit then i would not chose them. Stay away from dogs like Italian greyhounds because they can be injured easily. Good Luck with pet searching. Also, I think just plain "mutts" can be the best dogs too.

While it is important to pick the right breed of dog to make sure your children are safe, it is also important to pick the right breed of dog that will be safe from toddlers. People with small children should not get small dogs like pomeranians, chihuahuas, etc. These dogs, especially when puppies, are easily injured and little people can hurt them unintentionally. If you are going to get a puppy, you are better off with a mid-sized breed with a great disposition, something like a lab. If you don't want to put up with potty training your kids and your dog, perhaps a visit to your local shelter is the best thing to do. They can hook you up with a great dog that is suited for your kids and you will end up with a companion for them to grow up with. Good Luck.

There are many breeds known to be child friendly, but you should consider the health risks to your toddlers.

Any dog can bite under the right conditions and toddlers don't know better than to do stuff to the dog to make it react in anger.

Also a dog if it goes outside is subject to flea's and ticks. Animal dander is a common allergen and allergy is common in todlers.

I read today about a pit bull puppy who mauled its owner's child. The child has severe spinabifita and has no feeling in his lower extremities. The puppy was put down.

If you still wish to get a dog talk to your pediatrician first.

Any dog if trained right can be good around toddlers. I have a rottweiler that is just magical with my 18 month old grand-daughter. My dog will lie there and let her climb and crawl all over her and won't move an inch.
Some other dogs that are natural "nanny's" though are the Mastiff, lab, retreiver, dobies, and if trained to be loving and not aggressive- pit bulls.

A greyhound. Most of them are very friendly, patient, and never bite or snap. They are big and strong enough that the toddler can hang onto the tail or climb on its back without doing any harm. They don't bark much, if any. And if they growl, it is only to say something like, "Please be careful and don't jump on me, there's a kid on my back."
You can get a retired racing greyhound (some only 18 months old) from a rescue organization.
When I first got mine, my 4-year-old daughter really wanted to look into his mouth. She was gentle, but he didn't like the idea and kept pulling his head away from her. Finally she convinced him to let her open his mouth and look in. He never growled or offered to snap. That's a typical greyhound.
They do need a fenced yard.

I would suggest not getting a puppy if you have toddlers. A nice labrador from a shelter would suit your needs perfectly. Labradors are gentle and extremely forgiving. They start to mature and get out of their puppy stage at around 3 or 4 years of age. Hope this helps!

puppies and toddlers are a tough mix. If you are looking for a larger breed, a Golden, Pyraneese or a Bermise Mountain dog might be okay. Smaller ones, king charles and Shih Tzu. check out this site

From journey I woudl say pit bulls because they can get countless ailments that cause them to reveal and attack human beings, and smaller yippier breeds as they're no longer as forgiving of children. the biggest element is to do your study and bypass meet the dogs. the acceptable element may be to easily bypass to a safeguard consisting of your infant and ask them for some help. The volunteers there can help you hit upon the acceptable puppy on your position. good success!
