While I can't provide a specific answer to this question, I can indeed point to an excellent resource on this topic.
Go to your local library/bookstore and get hold of the book "From Beirut to Jerusalem' by Thomas Friedman. It will be an excellent - though detailed - answer to your question.

Beirut City is one of the most cities which has the best cultures and all kind of cultures because many people have came here and lived here. Beirut was always the capital of the Middle East and it is a lovely city. All the events which happened recently after 1/Dec/2006 was bad but everything before it was amazing.

Beirut has always been the capital of cultures.
There are many culture events that take place in Beirut: concerts, festivals, conferences, theater plays...
Most of the best universities in Lebanon are located in Beirut (AUB and LAU) and they host many cultural events during the year.
Also, the best hotels are located in Beirut and they host conferences or theatrical events and even fashion and jewlery shows.
The most recent event was just before New Year, Feyruz (a Lebanese Legend in Musik) sang at the Biel.
Also last summer just before the war, 50 Cent came to Beirut and had a huge concert at the Biel.
That is just to name a few, for more details please visit:

amazingly enough, and despite all we hear or expect to find in Beirut. I arrived a couple of weeks ago to live here for 2 years (work) after being away for nearly 16 years.
when I left this country was in a civil war.
Cultural events? you name it it's happening, theatre, book launches, painters exhibitions, debates and seminars.
I am so excited, this city is buzzing with so much and yet media and people are preoccupied with demonstrations and politicians.
what a shame...

Beirut contributed to the world by its invention of the "Disco Ball".
Example of usage:
Tempting Girl: Oh Smutty! Take me under the disco ball!!!
