They're not all insane. Take a step up to a better brand of jeans that has better quality, they spend more time fitting them to the women shape. Also look for the jeans that have a S, P, R or L associated with their numbered size. This means Short, Petite (which is same as short), Regular and Long.

i am 5'4" tall and sometimes I find stuff in the petite sections, and sometimes they are not long enough. Yet normal sizes at 31" are too long. I gave up a long time ago finding pants that are the right length. For $18 I have them hemmed at my dry cleaner. Problem solved.
If I were to try and find pants that fit everywhere it would be a waste of time and make me depressed. hemming is one of the easiest alterations to make. And normally I know how to do it myself, but it is just as easy to take to tailor.
Frankly find pants that fit everywhere else, and worry about the length later.
It could be worse...my friend who is 5'10" can never find pants that are long enough. We can always take away fabric. you can't add it.

they make their jeans long so that EVERYONE can fit into them...even the tall ladies. us short gilrs can get the jeans hemmed but the tall girls cant add length. but i agree with you...its a pain to have to buy a pair of 200 dollar jeans but have to spend another 30 on hemming...they should just come in varying lengths!

I guess they make them long because short people can get them hemmed but tall people can't make them longer. Also, a bit too long but not dragging on the ground looks much better than too short.

Sometimes try used stores, Yeah! Used stores sometimes have awesome torn up jeans for great prices!
Especially since "torn up" is in right now!
But if all fails, go to your local tailor!

i guess it`s because the average height of american women is 5`7.therefore the not so long legged ladies have problems with finding the rigth length
